An Eggcelent idea!

A while back, I made some message eggs.  These are really a fun and unique way to deliver a message to someone.

The process is somewhat simple.   You need a hole in both ends of the egg.  One will be slightly larger, as this is where the tiny rolled slip of paper will enter the egg.  Once you have made the holes, blow out the contents of the eggs.  You can blow them into a bowl or down the sink; the choice is yours.

This is a really good way to get the kids to be quiet, even if it’s for a few minutes.  I mean, why not put all that hot air to work?  Ok, I know that sounds horrible.  My daughter is at the stage that silence is a sin.  I look forward to bedtime, A LOT lately! I suppose technically you could even make a mini-science lesson out of this project.

Once the yolk and egg white have been removed, gently run water through the egg to wash out any remaining egg.  Then let dry at least 24 hours.

Now you’re ready to paint.  I found using wooden food skewers work inserted into the egg works really well.  You can put either end of the skewer over a small bowl without the egg coming into contact with anything.  This is great for allowing the paint to dry.

There are a variety of ways to get the paint on the eggs.  I’ll let you experiment and have fun with that.  No two people will paint the same way anyhow.  Plus that’s a really fun part of this process.  Let your creativity shine through. Once painted, I let the eggs dry.  I keep mine on the skewer during the drying process.  I try to let them dry overnight, if possible.

I admit, I’m not the most talented painter.  I stick to easy designs but I try to differentiate them a bit.  The only real limitation is your imagination.  This is another area that kids can join in the creative fun.   Let their minds wander and see what they come up with.

I had a lot of fun making these.  These would be great for Easter, to announce a pregnancy, perhaps surprising a sports fan with an egg colored in the team colors and the note announcing tickets to a game.  No matter what the purpose you choose, painted eggs truly make an eggcelent way to communicate a surprise!

Getting Married – Casablanca Style

Published March 31, 2015 by lynn k scott

A less-known tidbit about me is that I am a certified wedding planner.  I really would like to pursue this as a full-time career one day.  Right now, I offer some planning solutions and have planned and executed a few weddings for friends.

Part of my certification was to plan a themed wedding.  We were given some parameters and the following was the outcome of the assignment.  One day I hope to make this particular themed-wedding a reality.

Wedding Theme:  Casablanca

  • Wedding can take place outside; reception inside
  • Facility has a fireplace, stage with a piano, tables/chairs for reception on-site, dance floor, full kitchen and raised area for buffet.
  • Groom’s Attire:   white jacket tuxedo with black pants
  • Bride’s Attire:  vintage-style wedding dress
  • Music:  Piano player and singer
  • It’s not the typical wedding. In addition to the couple dressing up, the guests also will have the option to dress in zoot suites, pinstripes, feather boas or similar 1940s attire.
  • The outside has an arch that can be decorated and rental chairs placed outside for the ceremony.
  • This venue has a stage, setting up a screen and playing the movie Casablanca during the cocktail hour would be relatively simple.  Perhaps serving popcorn and/or nuts during the cocktail hour would be a nice accompaniment to the movie.
  • Martinis could be the signature drink for the evening. Beer and wine would be served for those who aren’t martini fans.
  • Waitstaff could be dressed in tuxedos and wear fez hats to bring in the Moroccan feel as that’s where Casablanca is located.
  • Everyone knows Humphrey Bogart smoked cigars in the movie, so there needs to be a smoking option, which this venue allows.  Maybe purchase a box or two of cigars to be placed on the bar.
  • Favors could be candy cigarettes.

That’s a quick snapshot of my Casablanca-themed wedding (created in February 2010).  This presentation earned me an “A” for the assignment.  The venue I chose is a local venue that could accommodate this theme.

QOTD: Topic – Sleep

Published March 31, 2015 by lynn k scott

“We must never forget why we have, and why we need our military. Our armed forces exist solely to ensure our nation is safe, so that each and every one of us can sleep soundly at night, knowing we have ‘guardians at the gate’.”  (Allen West)

I originally was going to post a true sleeping quote as I am lacking in that today.  However, in my quest for today’s quote, I found this and my Army-mom heart swelled a bit, I nodded in agreement and the today’s quote was selected.

Sponge Mom

Published March 31, 2015 by lynn k scott

My precocious 9 – year old is at it  again.  Recently,  she has dubbed me,  “the fun sponge”.

If I have to say no, “ruin” play time with school,  say anything remotely intelligent, she breaks out the “fun sponge” name.

According to my precious babe, I suck the life out of the fun.  Wow!   Ok, I can own that.  After all, my job is to make sure what needs getting done,  gets done.

Last night,  she upgraded me to the official,  “Sponge Mom” title.  It’s too close to the irritating, little yellow sponge cartoon, that makes me wanna to be tortured with hearing nails on a chalkboard, than hear his laugh, but I got this.

I cannot share that fact with my daughter.   I just smile,  let her know she is still to do as instructed because life isn’t fun all the time.   I know,  such a meanie by making her responsible.

Oh, her teenage years are going to be fun.   She won’t think so,  but I certainly will.  She hasn’t seen nothing yet.

Love Thy Bully

Published March 30, 2015 by lynn k scott

A little over a year ago, I stumbled across a page on Facebook called “Love Thy Bully“.  Joe had started the page and he was seeking Admins help to run this fun and informative bully-centered page.  It’s a positive page that promotes awareness of all the “bully” breeds.

I am a pit bull owner.  I have a pit mix named Smokey and I took him in around the time I “met” Joe.  I already had one dog, but Smokey needed a home and my latest foster had just gone to a new home.  Timing is everything after all.  I eventually had to resigned my position as a Facebook Admin because some personal issues were dominating my every waking moment.  Yet, I believe in the work Joe, his team and so many of us pit bull owners do in correcting an exaggerated stereotype of a some fantastic dogs.

I have worked in pit bull rescue.  I have been a pit bull foster mom.  I see dogs as individuals and with their own personalities. I don’t believe in breed specific legislation (BSL).  That is legally banning dogs from certain communities based on their appearance.  Funny, seems some people have forgotten how well that didn’t work when they tried that with certain people using their skin color.

While I am not stating there have never been attacks by pit bull breeds, I am realistic enough to know that the media is public enemy #1 against these dogs (imo).  They will run a pit bull attack story 200 times more than any other breed attack; if they even mention any other attacks.  While you will find bully bashers citing how there are more pit bull attacks, you won’t here them state how many more pit bulls there are in that particular area in comparison to other breeds.  That results in number skewing for their own agenda.  That’s not reporting facts.  The media is no better than yellow journalists when it comes to any pit related story.

Here’s a fun one for you:  Myth vs Fact:  Myth:  Pit bulls have locking jaws.  That’s FALSE!!!  In fact, a German Shepherd and a Rottweiler have stronger bit pressures than a pit bull.

I encourage you to visit Love Thy Bully if you have Facebook.  If I’m not mistaken, you can also find them on Twitter and Tumbler.  I don’t really use either of those other than to promote my blog, but it Tweet and Tumble, go for it.  In addition to the cutest bully pics, there is information on education, awareness, ending BSL and the like.

I have comments set to approve and this particular post will not be an avenue to bash any bully breeds. Staying with the positive energy Love Thy Bully provides, please only comment if you can share good information.  If you leave them a comment, let them know “Smokey’s mom” sent ya.
