Animated Walker

Published March 30, 2015 by lynn k scott

Every Sunday evening, I find myself with a few hours to spare while my husband and daughter go out visiting with her Godfather.  I’ve decided to start walking again.

I download a few more songs onto my phone, grabbed the ear buds and out the door I went.  My goal was 2-3 miles.  I should note, music plays a huge part in my life.  I attach very easily to songs and I song obsess (where I listen over and over to certain songs).  I also am very familiar with certain music videos.

As I begin walking, it’s hard not to want to dance as the music flows through the tiny ear buds into my awaiting ears. Sometimes I have a hard time just walking straight as the beat moves me.  The drivers of the cars zooming past me must be shaking their heads as I walk up the street.

Every so often, I smile breaks out across my face.  My head will sway back and forth as I lip-sync to one of my selected musical gems.  I am exercising AND smiling about it?  No, I’m not insane.  I’m just embracing the moment.  I want to be healthier.  I want the next 40 pounds I lose to be because of my hard work.  I’m tired of answering the question, “how did you lose so much weight” with “because I got sick”.

The artists who kept my motivation on this particular walk was Brantley Gilbert, Bruno Mars, Pink, Billy Joel, Fun, Pistol Annies, Florida Georgia Line, and Jessie J.  The play list changes weekly.

About halfway through my walk, “Marry You” by Bruno Mars started playing.  I think I’ve watched this video probably 50+ times (at least).  I had the worst time not starting the flash dance moves in the video.  I really had to resist the urge to do the Pony or kick out my legs and clap my hands during the walk (video references).  The cars were passing me at a good clip, so I resigned to bopping my head and smiling like a teenager who was just asked out by her high school crush.

When all was said and done, I had covered 3 miles in 64 minutes.  Considering it’s been years since I had been walking consistently, I’m happy with that time.  The goal is to cut that time in half.  When I meet that goal, it will be time to try running again.
