My Culinary Obsession

Published July 26, 2015 by lynn k scott

I have a culinary obsession.   I have to place blame with my old neighbor for starting it.   He was moving and had a garage sale.   Seems harmless,  right?

Little did I know,  the three pieces of bakeware I bought for $20, included two Le Creuset pieces.

If you are unfamiliar with these multicolor pieces, they are quality non-porous stoneware,  glazed interior (for easy clean-up), heavy and can give some “sticker shock” when they check the price tag.

I currently only afford to add to my Le Creuset collection by saving a little and taking advantage of clearance sales.

Yesterday,  while perusing Sur La Table, I came across a very nice selection of Le Creuset and most of it was on clearance.   Sadly, much of it was out of my price range even with it discounted.

I found a piece, that had been marked down twice and was 40% off.  I made a comment to hubby about how our anniversary was just a couple weeks away.

After walking through the store, we stopped back to look at the cookware again.  I was gifted a new piece for my collection.

This 12.5″, 3.5 quart dish has a new home!  It can go in the oven, broiler, grill, freezer and microwave and dishwasher.

I am moving away from cooking in metal pans and using glass or stoneware or ceramic.  I cook quite extensively, so the expense is justifiable to me; even if I use birthdays, anniversaries and Christmas presents to obtain them.

If you are a closet chef, kitchen guru or need a really nice wedding present, I highly suggest purchasing Le Creuset pieces.  They have everything you need to transform a kitchen.

All Roads Lead to Roma…

Published July 17, 2015 by lynn k scott

Working in a farming community, I absolutely love that I can drive past any number of tomato fields and have my sense of smell bombarded with that “fresh off the vine” smell coming from the growing tomato plants.  I see the tomato trucks threatening to drop some of their precious cargo as it makes its way down the road.

I happen to work within minutes of my favorite produce stand.  Once I see the tomato trucks, I know I can start purchasing my cases of tomatoes; 20 pounds to be exact.  For the next couple of months, I will visit the produce market and pick up a case of tomatoes, every Friday afternoon.

Every weekend, I will carve out some time to process and can my red bounty of Romas.  Once canned, they will line the top of my pantry.  Some jars will be made into marinara sauce, while others will simply be pureed and using in a multitude of culinary creations.

So what if my coworker calls me a freak (in jest, of course)?  Other coworkers will shake their head as I carry my case into my air conditioned office, waiting until the end of the day to be returned to the car so we can head home. They know how much I love being able to buy all these beauties at one time.  They just accept that canning is in my blood.

In my case, it’s safe to say…all roads to lead to Roma; tomatoes that is!

Smokey Bear

Published April 6, 2015 by lynn k scott

Smokey Bear, that would be the nickname of my 18-month old pit mix; Smokey.  He’s a bit smaller than the average American Pit Bull Terrier, as he is mixed with Bulldog.  I only stand 5’2″ and he only comes up to my knees.  That being said, my little pup packs a punch with his solid weight.

Smokey believes, if you are sitting on the couch or trying to relax, you obviously want him with you.  He has no problem almost smothering you with 50 pounds of solid love.  Your human persona will be replaced with that of cuddle machine. You are there for him to nuzzle your arms, lay his head on your heart so he can put his ears back and look into your eyes.

You are a jumping board.  When he needs to get up in a hurry, as you are the current cushion, you are magically transformed into a platform so he can spring to attention.  He will listen for the quietest sound and loudly alert you.  His favorite time to do this is between 4:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.  I am usually the only one up and he does his best to alert the neighborhood to the mystery sounds of city life.

This is my “ferocious” pit bull.  He loves attention, loves showering you with attention and he doesn’t even need an invitation.  He sees a person and he sees a friend.  He’s a little, solid ball of love.  Of course, when he can’t cuddle the closet human, he will settle for a snuggle with his canine brother. Good night boys.
